Ask For Price
A solvent dye is a dye soluble in organic solvents. It is usually used as a solution in an organic solvent. Solvent dyes are used to color organic solvents, hydrocarbon fuels, waxes, lubricants, plastics, and other hydrocarbon-based non-polar materials. One of the prominent application of solvent dye is the Fuel dye.

The molecules of solvent dyes are typically non polar or little polar, and they do not undergo ionization. They are insoluble in water. They form a colloidal solution in solvents. They have poor (basic dyes) to good (metal complex based) light fastness.

Solvent dyes are used for gold imitation (and other transparent metallic effects) of metallised polyester films. Also used in marking inks, inkjet inks, glass coloration, and so on. Some of the popular dyes are: Solvent Red 24, Solvent Red 26, Solvent Red 164, Solvent Yellow 124, Solvent Blue 35, etc.

Red and yellow solvent dyes are often azo dyes, and green and blue are anthraquinone dyes.

Application of Solvent dyes

Solvent dyes have multiple uses. They are applied to color organic solvents, waxes, hydrocarbon fuels, lubricants, and a variety of other hydrocarbon-based non polar materials. They are also used in making distempers, soaps, spirit inks, lacquers, wood stains, plastic, rubber, ink for HDPE woven bags, wood gloss finish, metallised polyester film, paddle dyeing of wool skins and furs, etc.

The most popular application of solvent dyes is in the plastics industry. Solvent-based dyes are used to add colors to a large variety of solid materials. Example can be given of PVC, acetates, nylon, polyester, acrylics, PMMA, polystyrene, PETP and styrene monomers etc.
Few of the popular solvent dyes along with its uses that will clearly represent the utility of the solvent dyes are listed below:
Color Index Name Applications
Solvent Black 5 Spirit soluble, synthetic resins, nylon, polyester
Solvent Black 7 Synthetic resins, ball point and felt pen inks, shoe polish, rubber paint
Solvent Orange 20 Lightfast, spirit-soluble for flexographic and gravure inks
Solvent Yellow 13 Lightfast, spirit-soluble for flexographic and gravure inks, plastics
Solvent Red 24 Extensive use in biological applications that includes demonstrating fats, lipo proteins and triglycerides present in tissues as a biological stain
